Tell us about you and your work

I am a vocalist, songwriter and theatre maker originally from Bogota, Colombia. In 2018, I released an EP called Chance on Me. Last year, I released my first full-length album, titled Heart. Right now, I’m working on my second full-length album! I’m super excited about this project, because it will feature the Bismuth String Quartet. The new record will be out in the spring of 2022.(Stay tuned for more info about this soon!)

This fall, I will also be debuting my first original theatre piece called Rhopalocera, which will be an independent show offering in the 2021 Philadelphia Fringe Festival. This piece was made in collaboration with actor and playwright Paul Deichmann.

What inspires you?

I’m always striving to create art that is authentic to me. As an immigrant, I’ve often felt like my identity is divided and fractured, but my artistic process has helped me understand the many complex parts of my identity as one unified whole. I find a lot of inspiration and power in knowing that I get to define my own identity and my own art. People often ask me what genre my music fits into, and I like to keep it vague and general with “singer-songwriter.” My music is a collage of all the music that I love. It’s actually counterproductive to try and pin into just one genre box, because I want to always feel free to create in whatever way I choose to.

What does community mean to you?

Community is all about safety and security. Community is the people and the places that make you feel safe and loved. It’s a net that we weave and tighten and take care of. I think about this a lot. Growing up, I learned to be incredibly self-reliant and self-sufficient. While I’m proud of this, I also know there is more power in working towards building a community that supports folks. It’s great to be independent, but we thrive so much more when we have communities to encourage us in our dreams and aspirations and who hold us up when we fall.

Favorite film

This is a really hard question!!!!! But I would probably say Al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios. Almodovar is probably my favorite director. But I also have to throw Twin Peaks in there, because I love the way David Lynch uses sound in all of his stuff.

Favorite song

I can’t pick just one!

Las Transeuntes - Jorge Drexler

Love Ridden - Fiona Apple.

Favorite place

Philly! I mean, I love this city so, so much.
