Y La Bamba / Stelth Ulvang (The Lumineers) / SLV

  • PhillyMOCA 531 North 12th Street Philadelphia, PA, 19123 United States (map)

THURSDAY MAY 10th - @afrotainoprod & PhilaMOCA proudly present - live in concert - Y LA BAMBA + SLV! Born in San Francisco as a first generation daughter of immigrant parents from Michoacan Mexico, Y La Bamba frontwoman Luz Elena Mendoza spent her childhood raised by the melodies and stories that were being told through traditional Mexican folk songs. As a musical artist, Mendoza finds the intricate space between creation and growth to keep her poetic expression emotionally raw and ever evolving. — Chicana chanteuse, Sandra Lilia Velasquez (SLV), sings soulful protest songs in English and Spanish that blend pop, electronic world beat, and sultry downtempo grooves. Her journey in music began as the founder and lead vocalist of the Latin band Pistolera, which toured internationally at festivals such as The Montreal Jazz Festival (Canada) Central Park Summerstage (USA), Sfinks (Belgium), and Ollin Kan (Mexico). They performed the NPR Tiny Desk Concert and had their music featured on Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, and more. She initiated the next chapter of her artistic growth under her initials with an EP produced by heavyweight bassist Meshell Ndegeocello who also co-wrote one song and played bass on the recording. SLV's new album, PIECE OF MIND, is a sharp lyrical reflection on the current state of affairs that for the first time ever has her rapping. Also performing: Stelth Ulvang of The Lumineers. Doors are 8pm, showtime 8:30pm. Advance tickets are $12 ($14 at door) & are now available via PhilaMOCA.org. #AfroTainoSpring2018
