Latin Roots Live! will take over World Cafe Live once again to ignite Philly with the musical energy of Latin America. This time, we are proud to present the Chilean alt-pop sensation, GEPE, and the Afro-Brazilian samba-funk of Dendê & Band.
Since the age of 14 - where he appeared on the front line of the renowned superstar percussion orchestra, Timbalada (founded & directed by Brazilian music legend Carlinhos Brown) - Dendê has been creating his own style by combining various global rhythms like rumba, merengue, axé, afrobeat, reggae, and of course, samba into an infectiously, unstoppable groove that undoubtedly gets people on their feet. He and his band will set the perfect atmosphere for the vibrant showman that is GEPE.
Gepe (Daniel Riveros) is a singer-songwriter from Santiago, Chile. His recordings blend folklore (some clear influences are Violetta Parra and Victor Jara), pop and electronic. He emerged as one of the most important independent artists in Chile in 2005 due to his songs of heightened simplicity and innocence, soothing vocals, and warm and gentle sound. His live shows are on the other hand, a page right out of a Carnaval handbook. Bouncing dancers, colorful tribal costumes, and incredible pulsing rhythms, along with GEPE's boundless energy and stage presence makes him a must-see act.
The Latin Roots Live! Concert Series is inspired is Latin Roots, the bi-weekly radio series on World Cafe hosted by David Dye, which explores the vast variety of music from Spanish-speaking countries and people. Latin Roots Live! is produced in partnership with WXPN and made possible by the William Penn Foundation.
